Hardware

  • gl.inet OPAL (GL-SFT1200, Router

  • Mikrotik CSS318-16G-2S+IN

  • Keystone-Patchpanel

  • Lenovo Thinkcentre Tiny m720q with Intel-X550-T2 10GBE

  • Lenovo Thinkcentre Tiny m600 with second 1GBE NIC

  • Sipeed NanoKVM

  • 10" Power Strip

The rack was planned and built by myself to meet my specific requirements. I wanted to fit at least 5U of equipment, so I opted for a 6U rack rail system from Adam Hall (model 61535B6). Most of the structural hardware was ordered from aluxprofile.com.

The frame is constructed using 3030 aluminum slot profiles, with the following dimensions: 4× 263 mm (though I would recommend 266 mm for a better fit with the MikroTik)

  • 4× 250 mm

  • 4× 300 mm

  • 8× 3-way 3030 connectors 2× handles, plus all necessary screws and mounting hardware

The result is a compact, portable 6U rack, custom-built for LAN party environments and small-scale homelab setups.

Software

  • OpenWrt

  • Proxmox

What inspired you to build your homelab, and what’s its main purpose today?

The idea behind building this rack was to create a portable environment for small LAN parties at home, with 10G capability to host a LAN cache for up to 14 people. It was designed to include all necessary hardware for network separation and to provide space for at least two small Proxmox hosts. Currently, I have 1U of space left to add another host if needed.

What’s one part of your setup (hardware or software) that you’re especially proud of — and why?

The Proxmox hosts run game servers for Counter-Strike and Rust, as well as a wiki containing all relevant information for LAN party attendees.

What are your next plans, experiments, or dream upgrades for your lab?

My next goal is to set up a Pterodactyl server to simplify the deployment and management of game servers.
